The End Jew Hatred movement is spreading across the country — and sparking controversy

The NYC-based End Jew Hatred movement is increasingly making its voice known nationally — through rallies, petitions, a relentless press campaign and now in the halls of government. But who, and what, is this group? Its backers call it an unapologetic voice that’s fighting a growing problem — antisemitism — while its critics say it is an attempt to inject hawkish rhetoric into a national effort to combat anti-Jewish persecution.

Friend in high places: Last week, at an Orthodox Union fundraiser, Mayor Adams told attendees “we need to be duplicating what you are achieving” when it comes to yeshivas. At the same time, even as scrutiny builds on the quality of secular education at the private Jewish schools, his administration “is waging a legal battle to keep its own evaluations of 26 of the Hasidic schools under wraps,” The City reports. 

Reading rainbow: Upworthy reups a moving video of the late Sidney Poitier, recalling how, as a teen working as a dishwasher at a New York City restaurant, a kind, Jewish waiter taught him how to read — helping to launch an iconic acting career. 

Radical shift: The New Yorker does a deep dive into the life and work of Anzia Yezierska, a Jewish writer who was born in Poland around 1880, immigrated to New York City with her family and went “from a sweatshop worker to a famous writer,” as newspaper columnist Frank Crane wrote in 1920.
